Dromore Priest Celebrates Fiftieth Anniversary of Ordination

Newry, June 18, 2017:  A Mass of thanksgiving was celebrated at The Cathedral of Ss Patrick and Colman, Newry, on Sunday, 18th June, at 12 noon to mark the Golden Jubilee of Canon Michael Hackett’s Ordination.

Canon Hackett was born in Augher, Co Tyrone and attended Aughadarragh Primary School and St Colman’s College, Newry, before studying for the priesthood at Maynooth. After his Ordination, on 18th June 1967, he was appointed to the Staff of St. Colman’s College where he taught Latin and Religious Studies for 17 years. Following that, he was a curate in Ballela and then Lurgan before becoming Parish Priest of Moyraverty (Craigavon) and subsequently Kilbroney (Rostrevor).

Canon Hackett has been based in Newry Cathedral Parish for the past few years, where he serves as Chaplain to St. Ronan’s Primary School and St. Colman’s College.
