Easter Vigil

The Service of light

This video clip features the’Service of Light’, the first part of the Easter Vigil. The atmosphere in the church as the service begins is different from what we are used to: the holy water fonts are dry, all the lights are out and the tabernacle is empty. The service begins outside the church, where a fire is lit and blessed by the bishop. The Paschal Candle is prepared and lit from the fire. The candle is then processed through the church. Everyone lights their candle from the candle and it continues in procession until the whole church is alight. The Paschal candle symbolises Christ, the Light of the World.
